Gmail and sender filters

Connect Gmail so emails arrive in Branzy as messages, and set up Permit and Restrict rules for sender addresses.

Connect Gmail and incoming emails become messages in Branzy. Reply from the chat, and keep unwanted senders out with simple rules.

How to connect

  1. Open profile settings → “Add-ons”.
  2. Choose Gmail and allow access to your mailbox.
  3. Once connected, a new connection appears in your connections list: “Gmail — your address”.

What happens to emails

  • Each conversation (email thread) becomes its own chat, and the subject becomes its name.
  • The sender is created as a contact automatically.
  • A reply from the chat goes out as an email in the same thread.
  • Your own sent emails do not appear in chats.
  • You can create a task from the conversation with /task.

Connection settings

Open the connection from the list — its settings are split into three tabs.

  • General — the source and the “Display messages in a separate folder” switch, which keeps this connection’s emails out of the main message list.
  • Rules — sender filters (see below). This tab exists only for the mail connection.
  • Operators — who receives the emails. Press “Add”, pick teammates, and set a mode: Round robin hands each new conversation to the next operator in turn, Always assigns every conversation to that operator, and Do not assign gives access to the chats without assigning them.

Sender filters

Rules decide which senders’ emails reach Branzy. There are two types:

  • Permit — accept emails only from matching addresses;
  • Restrict — ignore emails from matching addresses.

To add a rule, type an address or a pattern on the Rules tab and choose its type.

Patterns

* stands for any number of letters, digits, and symbols, anywhere in the address. Matching is case-insensitive.

PatternMatches
anna@example.comthis address only
*@apple.comany address at apple.com
news*@*any address starting with news
*@*.apple.comaddresses on any apple.com subdomain

How rules work together

  1. If an address matches any Restrict rule, the email is ignored — Restrict wins over Permit.
  2. If there are no Permit rules, emails from everyone else are accepted.
  3. If there are Permit rules, only emails from addresses matching one of them are accepted.

For example, to receive emails only from Apple except newsletters: Permit *@apple.com and Restrict news*@apple.com.

Rules apply to new emails. Chats that already exist stay as they are, and emails from filtered senders do not appear in Branzy at all.
